Hamish Muir is a Scottish designer and teacher that is influenced by Swiss design and typography. He created geometric typefaces that appeared in his studio issues and won awards in 2011 and 2014. Along with the graphic designer Paul McNeil, Muir is also known as the co-creators of 8vo and MuirMcNeil.
8vo is a studio that Muir worked in. The studio had a project that was released as an issue named Octavo, and Muir shared the restraint of working with the same typeface family to combine illustration and English attitudes to typography. Octavo and its studio were in operation until the late 90s, and soon after Muir founded MuirMcNeil. The company MuirMcNeil was built upon the core foundations of exploring mathematical-inspired graphic designs and moving images. Muir sought to push the bounds of readability and innovation while working for an aesthetic. He did not want to be seen as a typographer, but rather as a graphic designer working with text. While working for MuirMcNeil, Muir revived his passion in working with posters.
